Extra Chilli Megaways is an online slot developed by Big Time Gaming and released on April 4, 2018. Set in a colourful Mexican street market, the game combines the popular Megaways mechanic with cascading wins, a free spins gamble feature and an unlimited bonus multiplier.
The slot features six reels with a changing number of symbols, offering up to 117,649 ways to win. It has a standard theoretical RTP of 96.15%, high volatility and a maximum advertised payout of 16,877× the stake.
Extra Chilli Megaways is particularly well known for allowing players to gamble their awarded free spins for a chance to begin the bonus with additional spins.
Theme and Visual Design
Extra Chilli Megaways takes place in a lively Mexican street market filled with colourful vegetables, market stalls and traditional architecture.
The reels are surrounded by chilli peppers, garlic, carrots and other produce, creating a bright and distinctive atmosphere.
The game’s premium symbols are four different chilli peppers: green, blue, red and purple.
Traditional playing-card ranks make up the lower-paying symbols.
The purple chilli is the highest-paying regular symbol, while the firework rockets act as the Wild.
The presentation is relatively straightforward, with most of the excitement coming from the Megaways mechanics and free spins feature rather than elaborate animations.
Gameplay and Megaways
Extra Chilli Megaways uses Big Time Gaming’s Megaways system.
The game features six reels, with between two and seven symbol positions depending on the reel configuration.
An additional horizontal reel appears beneath reels two, three, four and five.
Symbols on this horizontal reel count towards the reels above them.
At maximum capacity, the game offers 117,649 ways to win.
Winning combinations require three or more matching symbols on consecutive reels, beginning with the leftmost reel.
The highest-paying purple chilli can award up to 50× the stake for a six-symbol winning combination.
Other premium symbols include red, blue and green chilli peppers.
The changing reel heights mean that the number of available winning combinations varies between spins.
Cascading Reels
Extra Chilli Megaways includes a cascading mechanic.
Whenever a winning combination appears, the symbols involved disappear from the reels.
New symbols then fall into the empty positions, potentially creating additional winning combinations.
This process continues until no further wins are formed.
All payouts generated during the cascade sequence belong to the same paid spin.
Cascades become particularly important during free spins because each consecutive cascade increases the bonus multiplier.
Wild Symbol
The Wild symbol is represented by a set of firework rockets.
Wilds appear on the additional horizontal reel beneath the main playing area.
They substitute for regular paying symbols to help complete winning combinations.
However, Wilds cannot substitute for Scatter or Feature Drop symbols.
Because the Wilds appear on the tracker reel, their positions can contribute to combinations across the corresponding main reels.
Feature Drop
Feature Drop is one of Extra Chilli Megaways’ distinctive mechanics.
Feature Drop symbols can appear on the regular reels during the base game.
When one or more Feature Drop symbols land, the price displayed on the Feature Drop button can decrease.
This gives players an opportunity to purchase the free spins feature at a reduced cost.
If enough Feature Drop symbols appear to reduce the price to zero, the free spins feature activates automatically.
Feature Drop symbols do not appear during the bonus or on the additional horizontal reel.
The mechanic creates an alternative route to free spins beyond landing Scatter symbols.
Free Spins Feature
The free spins bonus activates when three or more Scatter symbols appear.
The number of Scatters determines the starting number of spins.
| Scatter Symbols | Free Spins |
|---|---|
| 3 | 8 |
| 4 | 12 |
| 5 | 16 |
| 6 | 20 |
During the bonus, Scatter symbols can appear on the additional horizontal reel.
Landing three Scatters awards three additional free spins, while four Scatters award eight extra spins.
The bonus retains the Megaways and cascading mechanics from the base game.
However, it also introduces an unlimited multiplier that increases with each cascade.
Unlimited Multiplier
The unlimited multiplier is the most important feature during free spins.
The multiplier begins at 1×.
Every time a winning cascade occurs, the multiplier increases by one.
For example, the first winning combination is evaluated at the current multiplier.
If the symbols disappear and another win is formed, the multiplier increases for the next payout.
The multiplier continues to increase with consecutive cascades.
Unlike the base game, the accumulated multiplier remains active between free spins.
There is no stated upper limit to how high the multiplier can grow.
This creates the potential for larger payouts when several consecutive winning combinations occur during the bonus.
However, a high multiplier does not guarantee a substantial payout because winning symbols must still appear.
Free Spins Gamble
Before beginning the free spins feature, players can choose to gamble their awarded spins.
The gamble takes place on a wheel displaying different outcomes.
A successful gamble awards four additional free spins.
An unsuccessful gamble reduces the number of available spins to the lower value shown on the wheel.
In some situations, this lower value is zero, meaning the entire bonus is lost.
Players can repeat the gamble, potentially increasing their starting allocation to 24 free spins.
Alternatively, they can collect their current free spins and begin the bonus without taking additional risk.
The Free Spins Gamble feature is optional.
It does not guarantee a better outcome and can result in losing the entire bonus before it begins.
Bonus Buy
Extra Chilli Megaways includes a Bonus Buy option.
For a cost of 50× the selected stake, players can purchase a spin that guarantees the activation of eight free spins.
For example, at a base stake of €1, the purchase costs €50.
The purchased feature still follows the game’s normal bonus mechanics.
Buying the bonus guarantees access to the feature but does not guarantee that the resulting payout will exceed the purchase price.
The Feature Drop mechanic may also provide opportunities to purchase the bonus at a reduced cost.
Bonus Buy availability depends on the casino and applicable regulations.
RTP and Volatility
Extra Chilli Megaways has a standard theoretical RTP of 96.15%.
The referenced game information also mentions RTP configurations reaching approximately 96.41%, depending on the feature conditions.
Players should check the active RTP within the game information menu before playing.
Extra Chilli Megaways is classified as high volatility.
This means that payouts can vary considerably between sessions, with larger wins potentially occurring infrequently.
Much of the game’s theoretical payout potential is concentrated in the free spins feature, particularly when the multiplier increases through several cascades.
RTP represents a long-term statistical average and does not predict individual results.
Maximum Win and Betting Range
Extra Chilli Megaways offers a maximum advertised payout of 16,877× the stake.
The largest potential wins depend on combinations of premium symbols, cascading reels and increasing multipliers during free spins.
The referenced betting range is 0.20 to 40 per spin.
Betting limits may vary depending on the casino, currency and game configuration.
The maximum payout is a theoretical limit rather than an expected result.
Mobile Compatibility
Extra Chilli Megaways is available on compatible desktop computers, smartphones and tablets.
Its six-reel Megaways layout adapts to different screen sizes.
The chilli symbols, tracker reel and cascading animations remain central to the mobile experience.
The game’s relatively straightforward presentation makes the mechanics easy to follow, although the changing reel heights can create a busy interface during longer cascade sequences.
Availability and performance depend on the casino platform and supported device.
Slotinia’s Verdict on Extra Chilli Megaways
Extra Chilli Megaways is one of Big Time Gaming’s most recognisable Megaways releases.
Its greatest strength is the combination of cascading reels and an unlimited multiplier during free spins.
The Free Spins Gamble also introduces an unusual choice, allowing players to risk their awarded spins for the possibility of starting with more.
Feature Drop provides another distinctive mechanic by allowing the bonus purchase price to decrease during regular gameplay.
However, the game has high volatility, and its bonus features can involve significant risk.
The Free Spins Gamble is particularly unforgiving because an unsuccessful outcome can eliminate the entire bonus.
The game’s presentation is also relatively simple compared with newer slots featuring more elaborate animations and multiple bonus modes.
Overall, Extra Chilli Megaways remains a strong example of classic Megaways gameplay, combining a recognisable theme with cascading wins and a potentially powerful free spins multiplier.
Responsible Gambling
Extra Chilli Megaways is a high-volatility game of chance involving financial risk.
Its RTP, bonus features and maximum advertised payout do not guarantee any particular outcome.
The Free Spins Gamble can result in losing an awarded bonus, while Bonus Buy options involve substantial upfront costs.
Players should verify the active RTP, understand the game’s mechanics and establish a budget before playing.
Gambling should always be treated as entertainment rather than a source of income.
